Leinster complete Nacewa signing

Leinster have completed the signing of the highly rated Auckland Rugby and Blues utility back Isa Nacewa on a two-year deal.

Leinster have completed the signing of the highly rated Auckland Rugby and Blues utility back Isa Nacewa on a two-year deal.

The province announced the capture of the 25-year-old this morning. Coach Michael Cheika described the Kiwi, who arrives next season, as "an exciting player with a strong work ethic".

The player himself has admitted it was a bit of wrench to leave New Zealand but a solitary cap for Fiji, in the 2003 World Cup, has made becoming an All Blacks an unlikely prospect, for now.

"I really enjoy playing for the Blues and Auckland but am very aware I have to make the most of my playing career while I can. All of us in this game know it is for a finite time-period so it really comes down to making smart decisions short and long-term," he said today.

"Having a shot at the All Blacks was and will continue to be my long-term goal. But the reality is that's not an option for me right now, so I have to get on with my career."

Given the probability of increased international activity for the likes of Luke Fitzgerald and Rob Kearney, the signing of Nacewa is a timely coup for the province, as he offers cover in a variety of positions across the backline and is also a reliable kicker.

"We are delighted that Isa has agreed to commit his future to Leinster. Isa has a wealth of experience at Super 14 level and he is an exciting player with a strong work ethic and I am confident that he will fit into the culture of the province," Cheika said this morning.

"Isa is a top class attacking player whose versatility as either a midfield or back three player makes him a threat as an out and out try scorer, as well as a playmaker in his own right.

"He will add great depth to our backline for next year and he will also increase our kicking options. He will be a great addition to our squad and we look forward to his arrival in the summer.

Cheika added that the province is continuing to search for additional squad members ahead of next season.

Today's announcement is a good start, however, as the player who has featured 54 times for Auckland and 40 times for the Blues, will be sorely missed.

On his departure, Blues coach David Nucifora said: "Isa has been in demand for quite some time. He is such an outstanding player to have in your line-up and has the ability to cover nearly every backline position. His authority and leadership within this squad is exemplary and Leinster is very fortunate to have him."
