When Loren Roberts wins, he does so in style and the veteran was in glorious form again yesterday when he won the Greater Milwaukee Open by eight strokes for his seventh career PGA Tour title.
Roberts shot a closing round of five-under-par 66 for a 24-under-par total of 260 to mark the fifth time he has triumphed on tour by setting a tournament record.
His total clipped four strokes off the previous best set by Paraguay's Carlos Franco last year. Franklin Langham was alone in second at 268 for his third runner-up finish of the season.
"This was a huge victory for me at the age of 45, playing against these 20- and 30-year olds," said Roberts after receiving $450,000 to move into the top-15 on the PGA money list.
"It has given me a tremendous lift and beating the record here by four shots is something I am never going to forget."
Roberts, who also set a tournament record in winning here in 1996, struck another telling blow for the elder statesmen of the tour after savouring his first success just six years ago.
The veteran was rated a 120 to one chance for this week's British Open at St Andrews but those are odds are sure to tumble following such a commanding performance.
