Shane Ryan misses out on World Championships final

Irish swimmer bows out in Budapest at semi-final stage

Ireland's Shane Ryan missed out on a place in the final of the men's 100m backstroke at the Fina World Championships in Budapest on Monday.

The American-born swimmer qualified for the semi-finals after finishing sixth in heat three in a time of 54.33 seconds, the 13th fastest going into the afternoon session.

Ryan also finished sixth in the second semi-final behind China’s Jiayu Xu, with the top five swimmers going on to qualify for the final. Ryan improved his time to 53.94 to finish 12th overall.

Nicholas Quinn was second in heat five of the 100m breaststroke, his time of 1:01.56 leaving him in 31st position and out of contention for the semi-finals.


Jordan Sloan failed to make it out of the heats of the 200m freestyle, while Mona McSharry failed to advance from the women's 100m breaststroke.
