The former Ireland bowler Boyd Rankin has been named in England’s squad for the forthcoming Ashes tour of Australia.

The 29-year-old Warwickshire paceman impressed the selectors during the recent NatWest series and is one of three uncapped players included in the English touring party.

The Tyrone man admitted today it was a “difficult” decision to make himself available for England but insisted it is one that has been vindicated.

“Obviously, it was a difficult decision,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “I’ve come a long way, but I think its all been worthwhile.

“I’m one step further to making my dreams come true, in terms of playing Test cricket.”

He added: “Everybody wants to play at the highest level, I’m no different. I’ve always wanted to try and push myself to play Test match cricket and I’m over the moon I’m in that squad.”

Rankin, Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance and Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes are the three players in the 17-man party who have yet to play Test cricket.

England have also recalled spinner Monty Panesar to their squad for the winter tour. Panesar has not played for his country since a well-publicised incident with bouncers at a Brighton nightclub but has been recalled after a spell on loan at Essex.
