PHILLIP McCALLEN (34), of Portadown, won a record five races at Saturday's Ulster Grand Prix meeting at Dundrod, Co Antrim. McCallen started the day in style by winning the Junior race, then went on to win the first Superbike race and the Regal 600 race.
Ian Loughter battled it out with McCallen and Phelim Owens in the opening laps of the first race, but Loughter fell off at the hairpin and McCallen pulled away from Owens. In winning the Regal 600 race, McCallen set the first 120 m.p.h. lap by a 600cc machine at Dundrod.
Phelim Owens of Dungannon set a record of 111.035 mph, in winning the 125cc race from Dennis McCullough and Gary Dynes.
McCallen streaked away from a seven rider battle for second place in the second Junior race, the runner up place going to Alan Patterson from Derek Young, Dennis McCullough, Jason Griffiths and Gavin Lee.
Cumbria rider Bob Jackson was challenging McCallen in the second Superbike until he was slowed by a broken exhaust pipe. John Cronshaw won the final race, for classic bikes, setting a record of 105.915 m.p.h. in the process.
