FITZGIBBON CUP: Galway-Mayo IT 2-8 St Patrick's/Mater Dei 1-9: JAMES LIDDY was the hero for Galway-Mayo IT when he drilled home a last-gasp goal to snatch victory in an entertaining Fitzgibbon Cup tie at Carnmore yesterday.

St Pat’s looked certain for a second win and a home quarter-final when Paudie Kehoe edged them in front with a free as the game slipped into stoppage time.

It was the sixth point of the game for the Carlow full-forward when he landed a 50-yard free.

But GMIT staged one final rally with Colin Egan breaking through the middle and setting up Liddy. The Newmarket-on-Fergus player soloed through and blasted low into the net for a dramatic winner.

It was the second goal of the game for the Clare man after he fired home four minutes after the restart following a move started by man-of-the-match Ger Mahon.

That goal levelled the game after St Pat’s led by 1-5 to 0-5 at the break thanks to a goal from JJ Farrell after 25 minutes.

The sides were level six times during a good contest. Galway senior Mahon was the dominant figure in the second half. Both sides should advance to the quarter-finals unless UUJ score a huge win over GMIT next week.
