The 23-year-old winger signed a four-year contract worth £25,000 a week, saying he had joined "the best club in the country so if I can't do it here then I won't be able to do it anywhere".

He flew to meet up with his new team-mates at their training camp in Switzerland last night.

Liverpool's willingness to drop their interest in the Brazilian Daniel Alves, whom Sevilla had valued at over £10 million, will allow Rafael Benitez to re-enter the market with money still available to launch a bid for Kuyt, particularly if Liverpool can pay the fee over the course of his contract.

Benitez has sold Fernando Morientes and loaned out Djibril Cisse this summer and, after signing Craig Bellamy, is still a striker light, with the 26-year-old Dutchman his main target.

Kuyt is keen to move to Merseyside but Feyenoord will need to reduce their £9 million valuation if he is to force through the transfer.

Benitez is still offloading players to free up funds, with Salif Diao and Djimi Traore expected to join Charlton Athletic and Jerzy Dudek and Jan Kromkamp possible makeweights in any deal for Kuyt.

The Dutchman would hope to benefit from Pennant's continued development on the flank. Controversy has dogged the winger on and off the pitch but he showed flashes of his quality last season despite Birmingham's relegation from the Premiership.

"I've dreamt about this since I was a little boy so I'm looking forward to making the most of this opportunity," he said. "I always wanted to come to Liverpool. This is the only club I would have wanted to sign for."

Meanwhile, winger Paul Anderson (18) and goalkeeper Scott Carson (20) have signed improved contracts at Liverpool.

Anderson, star of Liverpool's FA Youth Cup-winning side last season, has penned a new four-year deal while Carson - England's third goalkeeper in their World Cup squad - has agreed a five-year deal.

According to reports in Greece, Liverpool are also set to sign striker Lazaros Christodoulopoulos (20) from PAOK Salonika.
