Irish Senior Schools Cup Semi-final St Mary's 2 Limerick CBS 0Two second-half goals from striker Shane Kavanagh at Digifone Park, Ennis, yesterday sealed a place for St Mary's of Galway in the final of the Smart Telecom Irish Senior Schools Soccer Cup. Champions in 2001, the Galway side will face either PCC Falcarragh or Firhouse Community College in Tuesday week's decider.
For well over an hour the teams were evenly matched, with chances going a begging at both ends. But two superbly taken goals in the 78th and 88th minutes proved to be the difference between the sides.
In the first half defences dominated and the game was 24 minutes old before the first corner was conceded.
Moments later Galway captain James Whelan made the CBS goalkeeper Ger Barron stretch to his right to deny a decent effort.
As the half progressed Limerick got more into it and when winger John Mullane crossed from the right, Conor Kavanagh's header should have found the target, but goalkeeper Paul Conroy had it well covered.
In the 58th minute Shane Kavanagh showed a glimpse of things to come when his drive was deflected out for a corner. He eventually found the net with a chip over the advancing goalkeeper's head from the edge of the box.
The insurance goal came after Darren Smith picked out Kavanagh to his left. A low right-footed strike ended in the right corner to book a place in the final and an opportunity for the Galway college to reclaim the Dr Tony O'Neill Cup.
