Wales Open: Swede Robert Karlsson broke the European Tour's 36-hole aggregate record on Friday to earn a four-shot halfway lead in the Wales Open.
His rounds of 61 and 63 for a 124 total beat Tiger Woods and Frankie Minoza's records by a stroke and, on 14-under-par, left Karlsson four strokes clear of three Britons, first round leader Phillip Archer, Simon Dyson and Paul Broadhurst.
Colin Montgomerie is a further stroke back after fading badly on his back-nine.
Karlsson was delighted to put his name in the golfing history books.
"It's always nice to hold a record, especially if I'm better than Tiger," he told reporters.
"Things have just been going very well for me this week and everything felt simple. I hope I'm not putting a jinx on myself for the weekend by saying that."
Some of Karlsson's rivals, including Montgomerie, say his length off the tee is giving him an advantage but the Swede said that was only part of the story.
"I can take on some of the 280-yard carries but I don't know any tournament that has been decided on distance alone," he declared.
Karlsson's fifth European Tour title came four years ago and he is hoping to end his barren spell now that his putting has improved.
"I've definitely been hot under the collar before and that's something I've worked on," he said.
Montgomerie inched within a stroke of the lead early on in his round but played the back nine to one-over.
US Open champion Michael Campbell was not fazed by missing the cut after a 66, his last competitive round before defending his title.
"My game's fine. I got a few clubs wrong in the wind in the first round and I just didn't putt well," he said.
"The greens at Winged Foot are going to be twice as fast, how I like them, so hopefully I will be putting up a better defence than it looks from my scores here."
Campbell is taking a week off before flying out to America next Saturday, having recorded finishes of fifth, 12th, 37th and then missed the cut in his four events since coming back from a long holiday in Australia.
