Under-19 World ChampionshipIreland return to the Exiles Ground in Dubai tomorrow for their second-round match against newly-installed tournament favourites France, the shock 42-3 winners over title holders South Africa on Wednesday.

Ireland, too, caused an upset by defeating England 17-16 on Wednesday, so the young Irish side go into this second pool game with some confidence. But coach Charlie McAleese cautioned against over optimism.

"It's important to keep the lid on things, albeit beating the old enemy is still special. But we can take a lot from the manner of the victory, achieved by playing very positively. We've certainly got into our patterns of play very quickly despite a short preparation time. Often teams take time to settle in," said McAleese.

Ireland have limited knowledge of their opponents, in contrast to the match against England, whom the Irish played last month. "We've had a chance to watch the video of their game against South Africa," McAleese said. "We certainly have to respect their running ability and the way they keep the ball alive in attack.

"They've also got pace and a huge commitment to the running game. I'd also have to recognise that they have power up front as well. But we have to go into the match in a positive frame of mind. We will be looking to expand and improve on our first performance.

"For us it is a case of being more precise in taking our chances. We created a lot of openings against England but didn't finish them. It's fair to say as well that we'll go in as underdogs."

Conditions are expected to be cooler tomorrow, and that will certainly help Ireland, although the support staff have managed the heat very well thus far. "We used a special procedure at half-time in the game against England and I think the boys certainly felt the beneficial effects in the second half," McAleese said.

Ireland will announce their side today, but missing will be Queen's University student Tom Anderson, whose father Willie is the former Ireland lock and captain. Anderson junior was cited for injudicious use of the boot on a player on the ground and received a two-match ban as a penalty.

"We're not making any issue. It's fair enough. I understand the match commissioners have to be seen to be strict in the opening round. It's unfortunate for the player, but it gives an opportunity for another. We've got strength in depth in this squad. When Tom returns he will be refreshed and stronger."

All the others in the squad are available.

"Despite a very physical and tough game against England, we didn't pick up any injuries," noted McAleese.
