Padraig Harrington has moved to the top of the Ryder Cup standings thanks to his fourth-placed finish at the Tour Championship in America last night.

With no counting event in Europe, Harrington takes over from Swede Alex Noren in top spot on the world points list from which the first four members of Colin Montgomerie’s side will come.

As it stands, Harrington is the only Irish player in the automatic qualifying positions.

Phil Mickelson has returned to second place in the world rankings after his win in Atlanta.

Tiger Woods finished runner-up, good enough to give him a $10 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup play-offs, and has now been top of the rankings for the last 225 weeks and for a total of 567 weeks in his career.

Harrington climbs one place to seventh while Rory McIlroy (24th) and Graeme McDowell (48th) remain inside the top 50.
