No goalscorers, eh? It seemed like the hosts were taunting the pundits as they banged in goals left right and centre against Denmark, South Africa and Saudi Arabia to qualify for the second stage in some style.

Phillippe Troussier's South African side proved one of the disappointments of the tournament with ill-discipline, a disastrous emphasis on trickery and a reluctance to take their chances costing them a place in the group's top two.

Denmark, in contrast, who survived a Sepp Blatter-inspired red card frenzy in the game against South Africa, worked hard as a team, were well organised and gave the nightclubs a miss. With the Saudis doing little other than making up the numbers and enhancing their impressive reputation for sacking coaches at every opportunity, that was enough to see Bo Johansson's men into the runners-up spot behind France.
