Ghanaian shenanigans

African Champions League games can be such dull affairs

African Champions League games can be such dull affairs. Take the second leg of the final, between Ghana's Hearts of Oak and Esperance of Tunisia, for example. The Ghanaian club led 2-1 from the first leg and had home advantage in the second but found themselves 1-0 down with 15 minutes to go. The crowd decided to intervene and began lobbing missiles at one of the linesmen, stirring the Ghanaian police to action. They fired tear gas into the stands which resulted in the fans coming on to the pitch - accompanied by the VIPS whose plush section had also been hit by a canister.

With time running out Esperance goalkeeper Chokri El Ouaer attempted to have the game abandoned so began stabbing himself with a pointy weapon handed to him by a fan. He ran to the centre circle and collapsed but was ignored by the officials who knew his game. So, a heavily bleeding El Ouaer was stretchered from the pitch, his self-mutilation all for nothing, and Esperance stuck a midfielder in goal. Hearts of Oak scored three late goals, a source of annoyance for Esperance winger Walid Azaiez who was sent off for headbutting an opponent, punching a policeman as he left the pitch. See? Zzzz.
