London Irish booked their place in the quarter-finals of the English Cup after overcoming a determined effort from Yorkshire side Rotherham.
Five penalties from wing Niall Woods did much to put the Premiership side through, despite Rotherham starting the brighter. An early penalty from Woods put the home side ahead, before they conceded a penalty for offside, and Rotherham captain Mike Schmid crashed over after a quick tap.
After some scrappy play, the Exiles hit back. A looping pass from David Humphreys found Conor O'Shea and the Irish captain touched down in the corner.
The second half saw the Irish hold possession for long periods. A further penalty by Woods just after the break stretched their lead to 10 points.
A try in the last from Irish international Mark McCall was just reward for their pressure. The centre burst through several tackles inside the 22 to touch down under the posts.
An injury-time try from Rotherham out-half Simon Binns brought some respectability to the scoreline, but the win will give the Exiles some confidence as they look to greater battles ahead in the fight for Premiership survival.
