AMERICAN FOOTBALL NFL:THE PHILADELPHIA Eagles condemned the New York Giants to a second straight loss even without Michael Vick at quarterback, while the Green Bay Packers won to improve to 10-0 and match the best start in team history.
The Eagles ended a two-game NFL losing streak by beating the Giants 17-10 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Back-up quarterback Vince Young threw two touchdown passes in place of the injured Vick, including an eight-yard score to Riley Cooper with 2:45 left that snapped a 10-10 tie.
Philadelphia improved to 4-6 while dropping the Giants to 6-4 and into a tie with the Dallas Cowboys atop the National Football Conference’s East Division. Eli Manning fumbled at the Eagles’ 21-yard line with 1:17 remaining for the Giants.
The Packers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-26 behind three touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers, two of which were caught by Jordy Nelson, including one with 3:01 remaining after the Buccaneers had pulled within 28-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. John Kuhn and defensive tackle BJ Raji added rushing touchdowns for the Super Bowl-champion Packers, who previously started 10-0 on the way to winning NFL titles in 1929 and 1962.
“When you get to 10 wins, you can start forecasting out to your goals and our first goal is to win the division,” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy, whose team leads the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears by three games in the NFC North Division. The Packers visit the Lions on November 24th, the Thanksgiving holiday in the US.
The Lions rallied past the Carolina Panthers 49-35 as Matthew Stafford threw five touchdown passes. The Lions (7-3) overcame a 24-7 second-quarter deficit, becoming the first team in NFL history to win three games in a season after trailing by 17 or more points.
Although the Bears improved to 7-3 with a 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers, Chicago’s fifth straight win may have come at a price. Quarterback Jay Cutler, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, will miss the rest of the regular season after breaking the thumb on his throwing hand, ESPN reported.
The San Francisco 49ers racked up their eighth consecutive win by beating the Arizona Cardinals 23-7.
