Agustin Delgado thought he had scored his first Premiership goal for Southampton in their home win over Arsenal in November last season. But what would have been his only league strike so far was subsequently assigned as an own-goal to the Arsenal defender Kolo Toure.

Thus Delgado, a £3.2 million signing from Mexico's Necaxa, can boast only one goal at Liverpool in the English League Cup from two-and-a-half injury-hit years at St Mary's.

Personal pressure is building up since his contract expires at the end of the season.

Delgado, fully fit again, appeared as a 73rd-minute substitute for Neil McCann in the St Stephen's Day defeat at Fulham and could start tonight among changes following that 2-0 defeat.

The Latvian striker Marian Pahars has recovered from a thigh strain and the Ireland international midfielder Rory Delap is available after an ankle injury.

Kevin Phillips, with only one league goal from the opening-day draw away to Leicester, may replace Brett Ormerod.

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan said: "Whoever plays will need to be at his best. If we play against Arsenal the way we did against Fulham we will be beaten again, and we cannot afford to play as badly again."

Arsenal are expected to retain Gael Clichy at left-back as deputy for the suspended Ashley Cole. The 18-year-old Frenchman impressed in the 3-0 St Stephen's Day victory against Wolves.

His manager Arsene Wenger said: "Clichy is very quick and did very well against Wolves in what was his first Premiership game at Highbury."

The last time Arsenal lost away in the Premiership was by 3-0 at Blackburn on March 15th.
