Robert Damron captured his first PGA Tour title when beating local hope Scott Verplank at the fourth play-off hole in the Byron Nelson Classic in Texas last night.

After carding rock-solid par fours on the first extra hole, both left birdie putts agonisingly short on the second as the nerves were obviously setting in.

Two more par fours followed at the third before Damron finally broke the deadlock with a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-three 17th. Damron, a 28-year-old from Kentucky, said: "I'm pretty proud. It really hasn't settled in yet, it's been such a long day."

Both had earlier maintained the form which saw them head the leaderboard after three rounds, a pair of four-under-par 66s moving them up to 17 under for the tournament.

Tiger Woods, competing for the first time since his historic Masters win, finally shrugged off his ring rustiness to fire a superb 63 which moved him up to joint third on 14 under alongside Nick Price (67) and David Duval (67).

Spain's Sergio Garcia fared by far the best of the European challengers as a 65 moved him up to 12 under and joint eighth.
