One of the most enduring names in modern-day football, Vinny Claffey of Offaly, has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

Claffey has been one of the most popular players in the game, having made his senior debut for Offaly back in 1987.

However, he had to wait 10 years for his first major honour, when he helped Offaly win the Leinster title in 1997 under the management of Tommy Lyons, beating Meath in the final.

In those games Claffey came into his own with some great scores and a year later he won a National League medal. The Doon clubman was again part of the Offaly panel for this season's championship.
