Carranita steals the show as Branston Abby fails

CARRANITA was the mare who called the shots at York yesterday as Branston Abby failed to create a slice of history.

CARRANITA was the mare who called the shots at York yesterday as Branston Abby failed to create a slice of history.

Branston Abby was sent off 15 to 8 favourite to match the postwar best of 22 wins by a mare recorded by Laurel Queen.

But she could only finish fourth as Carranita, ridden by the inform Tim Sprake stole the show, sprinting home by four lengths from Daring Destiny in the Manchester Singapore Summer Stakes.

All is not lost for Branston Abby who will soon be back on the record trail.

Meanwhile Carranita, bought for a bargain 800 guineas, will try to secure a Group race win.

Carranita was registering the 3th victory of her career and her third in a Listed race.

"Our trainer Bryn Palling has done marvelously well to keep her going. We were thinking about retiring her," said part owner Paul Young.

"But she's done so well we might keep her going next season and we'll try and win a little Group race with her."

Trainer Mark Johnston was not too downcast with the performance of Branston Abby, who may not have been helped by being drawn on the outside of the field.

"I never worry too much about a bad run from her. There will always be another day," he said.

"She'll probably run again quickly wherever I can find a suitable opportunity. She has a heap of entries abroad."

Branston Abby's main aim will be the Haydock Park Sprint Trophy in which she finished second last year. And there is every possibility that she will race on next season.

"The owner has mixed feelings about keeping her going but I'm sure if she paid her way again this season he wouldn't retire her," said Johnston.

Green Perfume, second to the subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Pennekamp as a juvenile, has found his feet again after a disappointing three year old campaign.

He benefited from a positive ride by Richard Quinn in the WWAV North 10th Anniversary Stakes and had set up enough of an advantage to hold off the fast finishing Hi Nod by half a length.

Green Perfume's victory means he will be penalised 3lb for the Schweppes Golden Mile, taking his weight to 9st 9lb. He is also entered for the Stewards' Cup.

But Paul Cole's colt is an unlikely runner in either of the Goodwood handicaps and a more likely engagement is the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.

Coastal Bluff strengthened his claims for the Stewards' Cup when defying an unfavourable draw in the Anthony Fawcett Memorial Handicap.

Jimmy Fortune moved the gelding across to a favourable position and he finished strongly to defeat Tedburrow a head.

I thought the draw was bloody horrendous and he's done really well to win from there,"said trainer David Barron.

Coastal Bluff is set to carry 8st 5lb (including a 3lb penalty for this success) and William Hill were impressed enough to slash his odds to 7 to 1 favourite from 14s for the Goodwood sprint.

But Barron warned. "He needs to get his toe in and he won't run at Goodwood if the ground is fast."

For The Present, 15th in Coastal Bluff's race, won the Stewards' Cup for Barron two years ago. He is engaged in the race again but will only run if the ground is firm.

Pat Eddery went to just one short of another century when forcing Son of Sharp Shot up near the line to short head Romios in the Tim Hodgson Key Of The Door Rated Handicap.

Chris Thornton had his first success at York for six or seven years when Give Me A Ring held on by a head from Queen's Consul in the Hearthstead Homes Handicap.

. Then last evening Prince of Andros gave Pat Eddery his 100th victory of the season when landing Chester's finale, the Farndon Conditions Stakes.

Eddery brought the 3 to second favourite to the front in the short straight and pulled away to beat Don Vito by one and a half lengths. The success of David Loder's charge gave 44 year old Eddery his 23rd century in 24 years.
