Joining the team at Aldi allows people to be a part of something special.

Here, we speak to four Aldi employees about those opportunities, and what it’s like to work with the company.

Andreeas Binder, store assistant at Aldi in Knocknacarra, Co Galway

Mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Andreeas Binder has worked as a store assistant at the Aldi Knocknacarra, Galway store since October 2019. “I work in a great store where the team spirit is excellent,” he says. “The whole team are really friendly, and that’s really important for me.”

His role covers merchandising the store, cleaning, and customer service on the shop floor and at the checkouts. “You need to be focused, and a hard worker,” he says. “You need to be able to work on your own initiative, and you need to show good communication and customer service skills.”

He believes the best part of the job is the atmosphere. “Everyone works with each other and for each other, and there’s always a good laugh to be had. The flexible working hours are great for me, and with the rotas planned four weeks in advance, I’m able to plan my training and coaching sessions outside of work really well.”

Those coaching sessions include kids’ judo and kickboxing twice a week. “I’m very busy outside of work, so for me Aldi is perfect. The management team really encourage me to pursue my dreams and are very flexible when it comes to my hours.”

Career progression and benefits are also important. “I love the fact that it doesn’t matter how long you are in the company, or how old you are, but if you’re consistently performing to a high standard, you will be given opportunities to progress. From day one, you will be given the tools to do the job, and I find that I’m constantly learning new things. I get four weeks holidays per year, plus paid bank holidays. We also have access to a rewards scheme, where we can get discounts on things like gym memberships and clothes stores.”

Job security has been particularly important during the pandemic, and is something that Aldi is able to offer. “I’m extremely grateful to have been working in such a secure job over the last while when there’s been so much uncertainty due to Covid-19. I’ve found that the customers have been really understanding of our role as frontline workers during the pandemic, and they have been really thankful for all that we have done for them.”

Jade Thorpe, deputy store manager at Aldi Blanchardstown

Jade Thorpe has worked with Aldi for almost three years and is now deputy store manager at Aldi Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, having previously been a store assistant. “Aldi is great at giving you the opportunity to move forward with your career,” she says.

“At just 21, I had the opportunity to progress, and I felt it was fantastic to further my career regardless of my age. I have had useful training and development as both store assistant and deputy store manager, which is key to career progression. To succeed at Aldi, you have to have a strong work ethic and be willing to work in a fast-paced environment.”

Teamwork and the friendly atmosphere are the best parts of the job for Thorpe. “My favourite part of my job is working with a team. Working with Aldi is fast-paced, rewarding and extremely engaging as you constantly have to engage with your colleagues which I find gives you a great atmosphere in store. You become friendly with your colleagues very quickly.”

Ruzica Kasalo, deputy store manager, Celbridge, Co Kildare

Ruzica Kasalo works at Celbridge as a deputy store manager having been with Aldi for just 10 months. She was attracted to the company by the flexibility and benefits on offer. “The shift work allows me to be flexible,” she says.

“The management team provide us with a whole month’s rotas ahead of time which allows me to make plans outside of work. I’m a mother of two and it’s tough to find a job with shifts to suit your lifestyle. But with Aldi, I’ve always been able to make both work. Of course, your salary grows with length of service too which is a bonus.”

My colleagues are part of my everyday life and I've made a lot of friends here

Moreover, the work is never boring. “The time flies by. It’s always interesting and there is a real community feel in the team. My colleagues are part of my everyday life and I’ve made a lot of friends here. The customers in my store are regulars and it’s great to see the same faces every week who recognise you. This is what creates the atmosphere I love.”

Career progression is another plus about the role. “I have a great store manager who is very focused on supporting the team to progress from store assistant to deputy store manager and then onto assistant store manager. We get trained in all aspects of the job. It is tough, but nothing comes overnight and you’re always learning here every day.”

Leonard Baxha, store assistant at Aldi Navan

Leonard Baxha has been a store assistant at Aldi Navan, Co Meath, for the past four years. “I used to shop at Aldi before I started work here and I liked the way the store worked,” he says. “I started working as a caretaker, now I am working as a store assistant which is a multi-disciplinary role.”

He advises others thinking of coming to work with the company to be hardworking, flexible, a team player and willing to learn. “If you can do that, you will succeed.”

Every day you can feel the friendliness and support of all the staff

Customer interaction is the best part of the job for him. “I really enjoy working at the tills and meeting customers, but I also enjoy the fast pace of the shop floor. It was a great effort from all the members of the team during the pandemic, being on the frontline, helping and serving the customers.

“I am happy working in Aldi,” he continues. “It is a great place to work. Every day you can feel the friendliness and support of all the staff. Aldi is committed to looking after your mental and physical wellness, and they offer a lot of support in this area for colleagues which is a great benefit. Aldi also gives you great opportunities and support for your career progression, and if you work hard, it’s something that is accessible to everyone.”
