Sir, - Arminta Wallace's article on Yehudi Menuhin, "A wonderful performance comes finally to an end", (The Irish Times, March 13th) recalls that the great violinist played in Dublin in 1953 and 1964.
In 1977 the people of the village of Churchill, outside Letterkenny, had the privilege of watching and listening to him as he played jigs and reels at Comhaltas sessions in Hugh McCafferty's pub and also in the kitchen of Derek Hill's house at Gartan.
Mr Menuhin came over to Donegal to be painted in Derek Hill's studio: the result was an oil on canvas, 19 1/2 ins x 29 ins, "Yehudi Menuhin Preparing the Delius Violin Concerto for Recording". As many of us were not good at the pronunciation of foreign names the great man was affectionately known locally as "Hewdie McMenamin". Needless to say he was a dab-hand at the jigs and reels. - Yours, etc.,
Colm McGlynn, Carnamoyle, Muff, Co Donegal.
