Sir, - It is a well known fact that the abolition of water charges was a trade-off against terminating residential property tax. Does this mean that if water charges are brought back, in any guise, so also will residential property tax, followed inevitably by full domestic rates for everyone, urban and rural?
This, on top of heavy mortgage repayments, is a recipe for disaster. Do away with water charges, but set our minds to making a serious and sustained effort to conserve water use, by heavy advertising and by example in our homes and workplaces and elsewhere.
