Madam, - In a local pub last Saturday, as the World Cup match between England and Paraguay was about to start and the English national anthem was played, the sound on the TV was turned down.

I understand that such disrespect has occurred in some other Dublin pubs.

How should Irish sports fans who find such prejudice towards our nearest neighbours distasteful respond? Clearly we should not bring our English friends to pubs where such bigotry is manifest. Perhaps we should also tell our Irish friends who share our distaste for such behaviour to boycott those pubs too.

No doubt, after the World Cup, is over those same pubs will want to put their wallet where their mouth is so to speak, and welcome English customers and the money they spend. - Yours, etc,
