Sir, - We agree that horses should not be allowed to wander about on roads, be a danger to the public, or be ill-treated or starved. But must the solution to these problems include the removal of the children's horses in Cherry Orchard? Money is needed to provide fenced grazing areas, stables and instruction in the care and management of horses. Money can be found to assist sports facilities in other areas. What has happened to the Lottery funds?Given the many problems thatyoung people face today, surely it would be a more constructive policy to assist these young people, and others like them, to gain skills, confidence and pride in their achievements. With an understanding of horses and competence in management, they would have prospects of employment.Millions of pounds are being promised for more prisons and we hear of the necessity of more drugtreatment centres. In the long run, however, prevention is better then cure. - Yours, etc.,H. S. Twigg,Newtownmountkennedy,Co Wicklow.
