A chara, - I recently had to travel by train from Ballinasloe to Waterford and experienced a somewhat quaint pricing system, to say the least. When I asked the cost of a ticket, I was quoted £29. Somewhat surprised, I enquired whether this was for a single journey, to be told that a single journey cost £30.
As the journey necessitates a change at Kildare, I asked about the price from Ballinasloe to there, to be told: "Single, £10.00 and return, £8.50". Needless to say, I bought my return ticket. When I reached Kildare, I bought a single ticket to Waterford for £10.
By purchasing two tickets I paid £18.50, whereas if I had bought one it would have cost me £29! If I may paraphrase other letter writers on a different semi state company, "is this a record?" - Is mise, le meas,
