Time to give good priests a break

Madam, – Having just returned from El Salvador where 50,000 people celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Martyred Archbishop of Salvador, Oscar Romero, the question should not be whether we should give good priests a break (April 12th) but whether there are any good bishops around to give the Irish church the necessary leadership required at this critical time.

We need bishops in the mould of Oscar Romero but alas, I cannot find any credible bishop around who hasn’t been tainted by cover-up of clerical sex abuse except Diarmuid Martin.

All Irish bishops should tender their resignations and a clerical lay commission should examine their record in the area of clerical sex abuse cover-up and if they are clean they let them be reinstated. Otherwise, there are many good priests out there who would be worthy future bishops, including two exemplary ones here in Malahide parish. – Yours, etc,

BRENDAN BUTLER,

The Moorings,

Malahide,
