Sir, – In considering Brian Boyd's comments about taking on the regressive left ("What's left? A regressive political agenda", Opinion & Analysis, February 14th), it is best to remember that when standing at the North Pole, every direction is to the south. In Ireland, as far as the left is concerned, any other opinion that does not conform is to the right. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – The whole reason that the world is shifting away from this “liberal” world order is that nobody signed up to it in the first place. It was advanced by stealth without any direct democratic mandate. It has become a dictatorship of thought, where one cannot openly debate certain issues without drawing the ire of some well-meaning liberals. The ballot box is possibly now the only safe place a conservative is free to express an opinion. – Yours, etc,
