A chara, – I’m wondering if we should just abolish political parties altogether, as it seems to me that the only people talking sense at the moment are the Independents. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Perhaps it is about time to take a leaf from the Catholic Church in medieval times. Lock the TDs into Dáil Éireann with bread and water until they stop their squabbling and get a new government up and running. – Yours, etc,

FERGAL MacALISTER,

Artane, Dublin 5.

Sir, – In the pages of The Irish Times 50 years ago, the critic Vivian Mercier adroitly encapsulated Waiting for Godot as "a play in which nothing happens, twice". However, not even Beckett, our great absurdist, could conceive of a long-running farce in which nothing happens, thrice. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN HUDNER,

Dún Laoghaire,

Co Dublin.

Sir, – I suggest that when we finally have a new government, a referendum should be held to insert into the Constitution a clause which would detail a time limit on the formation of same in the future.

A deadline of 28 days after polling day would concentrate minds – on all sides of the House. – Yours, etc,

DIANA WHITE,

Glenageary,

Co Dublin.

A chara, – Regarding the election of taoiseach, is it not time for the voters of this country to put both these political dinosaurs out to grass? – Is mise,

JOHN HICKEY,

Tralee,

Co Kerry.

Sir, – Are we on the verge of creating a whole new arrangement between our political parties and Independents to form a government?

I believe it can be done and that we should call it after our favourite meal, the Irish stew.

Nothing wrong with an Irish stew. As long as they keep it hot, we’ll have a stable administration. – Yours, etc,

DAMIEN CARROLL,

Kingswood,

Dublin 24.

Sir, – Another election would be acceptable if there were no posters and no leaders’ debate. Any hope? – Yours, etc,

MARGARET LEE,

Newport,

Co Tipperary.
