A chara, – To my surprise I saw a grey fox dead on the roadside whilst driving out of Dublin on the approaches to the M4 on June 7th.
Unfortunately, I was unable to stop and examine it because of the traffic. It was a beautiful silver-grey colour and about 30 per cent larger than the normal red fox. The grey fox is a recognised sub-species in Britain and larger than the red. I saw one crossing a road north of Ripon in Yorkshire many years ago. Like red foxes, they are reported in towns and cities.
Seemingly the “greys” are here in Ireland too. Can anyone confirm this and inform about their distribution? Is anything being done to conserve this magnificent creature? – Is mise,
