Surge in bank charges

Sir, – Like many in Ireland, we are struggling to make ends meet, chasing our tails. I am a full-time home carer for my fiancée. In the past four weeks we have been hit for bank charges that amount to one-sixth of our monthly income.

The gentleman at our Bank of Ireland branch says I agreed to the terms and conditions when I took out an account. Yes, I did. And I am paying the price.

Besides the taxpayers (I was one prior to my partner’s illness) bailing out Bank of Ireland by at least €3.5 billion, I suppose the fees I am charged help to pay for Bank of Ireland’s chief executive’s salary of €690,000 and total remuneration of €843,000 for 2012. I just hope he appreciates our generosity towards him. – Yours, etc,

DOUGLAS SAWYER,
