Status of Irish in the EU

Madam, - The proposal to make Irish an official working lanuage of the EU is derisory. Let's put it in perspective. Neither Catalan, which has 6.5 million speakers, nor Basque, which has 600,000 speakers, is an official working language of the EU. It would not make sense for Irish to be an official working language (which hardly anybody even in Ireland would use for EU business, never mind anybody in the broader EU) when not even Catalan and Basque are.

This will just be an expensive and wasteful gesture to hide the fact that Irish language policy since the foundation of the State has been an utter failure. The problem should be fixed at home. - Yours, etc.,
