Madam, – Frank McNally (An Irishman’s Diary, October 29th), likens the new Aviva Stadium to a giant “bedpan” rising over Dublin 4. As a local of the area I would not like to think that I am living beside a giant bedpan. Rather I tend to see the new structure like two giant tsunami waves rising from the ocean of Dublin 4’s residential landscape. In Wittgensteinian language the “stakeholders” in the new stadium will include the State, the IRFU, the FAI and of course all those supporters, both rugby and soccer, who bought long-term indentures in then project.
The stadium will be as much an icon of the modern era as Frank Gehry’s concert hall in Los Angeles. – Yours, etc,
