Madam, - On Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend, my wife and I, with hundreds of others, were enjoying the magnificent surroundings of Lough Dan, Co Wicklow, which were bathed in sunshine and tranquillity.
The silence was suddenly shattered in mid-afternoon by the grating noise of a speed-boat hauling water-skiers over the wide expanse of the lake. Ironically, the boat emerged from a section of the southern shore which proclaims itself to be "Private Land - No Public Access to Lake Shore".
Yet the few individuals who operate this speed-boat can avail their privileged position to destroy the beauty and tranquillity of Lough Dan for hundreds of others by creating serious noise pollution and severely disturbing the surface of this tranquil lake.
Surely bodies such as An Taisce or Wicklow County Council can take steps to prevent the desecration of Lough Dan.
The authorities in Kerry were able to stop speed boats destroying the peaceful lakes of Killarney. Can similar action not be taken in Co Wicklow? - Yours, etc.,
