Sir, – Martin McDonald raises the perplexing need for ministerial advisers in addition to a well-staffed Civil Service (Letters, August 7th). Indeed, the exact function of these supernumeraries is puzzling. Recent events would seem to indicate a lack of any prior consultation, reflection or foresight by Ministers. – Yours, etc,
