Sir, – An article on Sinn Féin pay policy (News, August 3rd) stated that the €35,000 take-home pay of Sinn Féin TDs was in contrast to other TDs who are paid €87,258.
Is the salary paid to Sinn Féin net or before tax? The salary quoted as paid to other TDs is gross before tax.
To have a take-home salary of €35,000 one would need to earn well in excess of the average industrial wage. The rest of their salaries is “used to employ staff or open constituency offices” . I was under the impression that one can not give more than €2,500 in any one year to a political party. What is the legality of Sinn Féin’s arrangement?
