Sir, – Further to recent correspondence (January 30th), this phenomenon is well known and has been for many years.
In 1983, the evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould published an article investigating the decrease in size of Hershey bars from 1950 onwards, alongside their increase in price.
He predicted that by December 1998 people would be paying 47 cents for a completely weightless bar! – Yours, etc,
