Senators saving their own bacon

Sir, – I find it a sad state of affairs once again with our politicians, that members of the Seanad linked to the Government parties would only break the party whip on a vote that helps save their own bacon (Home News, June 21st).

The vote taken on Wednesday in the Seanad to add the possible reform of the Seanad to the agenda as opposed to a referendum to abolish it was passed with the support of some Government party members.

Ironically, this show of self-preservation by these Senators only aids the case for the complete abolition of the Seanad. No whip-breaking in the Senate on matters of public interest. – Yours, etc,
