Madam, – The announcement that electronic voting is to be scrapped is the last nail in the coffin of Government waste and cost mismanagement over the past 10 years.

We now find ourselves with thousands of machines that are unsaleable and contracts for storage of up to 25 years on machines with a shelf-life of 20 years. Roll on June and the return of the peann luaidhe. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – It is a sad indictment of this Government that it has decided to scrap the electronic voting initiative. This long-running debacle is just another example of how we are poorly served by our Government. The machines that were procured at a cost of millions ended up in storage at considerable cost to the taxpayer. The only beneficiaries being those who leased the storage space to the Government.

India, with more than 700 million voters spread over a sub-continent has successfully rolled out full electronic voting during its current general election campaign. Our Government has proven through this and other mismanagement that they are not fit to govern. I wish we could put the lot of them in storage until the next election – now that would be a good use of taxpayers’ money. – Yours, etc,
