Sandymount cycleway

Sir, – The residents of Sandymount, who claim they are “pro-cycling” despite opposing cycle lanes, are now asking Dublin City Council to build them a promenade so that two lanes of car traffic can be maintained (“Sandymount residents come up with new plan for cycleway”, September 10th).

This idea was investigated in 2015 by the National Transport Authority, who determined it would take six years and cost €45 million. Given that the cycling infrastructure budget for 2021 is €360 million, this represents an eighth of the budget for the entire country.

How many thousands of kilometres of planned greenways and cycleways would have to be cut, just to avoid inconveniencing the wealthy residents of Sandymount and their polluting SUVs?

The level of entitlement is shocking. – Yours, etc,
