Roundabouts and cycling

Sir, – Anne Dallaghan claims (Letters, August 15th) that in her native Killiney, BMW and Mercedes drivers are the worst offenders when it comes to observing roundabout rules.

Perhaps it is more to the point that there may be more BMW and Mercedes drivers in Killiney [in south Dublin], and her perceived problem may be more to do with proportion than a person’s choice of car.

Sir, – I agree with Anne Dallaghan (Letters, August 15th) that Irish motorists lack rudimentary knowledge on when to indicate on roundabouts.

Along with being a motorist I am also a cyclist. When cycling through roundabouts you literally run the gauntlet with the added danger of avoiding a fatal impact.

On a number of occasions I have been cut off by motorists exiting left on a roundabout as I cycled through, sometimes coming within inches of being struck.

Here’s some simple advice to save lives or serious injury: obey the rules of the road.
