Sir, - In reply to Mr O'Reilly, I believe in tolerating homosexuals not because I approve of the homosexual life style (I don't), but because I believe in toleration. The alternative to tolerance is intolerance, and if we have learned anything from the history of Europe in this century and the history of Northern Ireland over the last 25 years it's that intolerance breeds hatred, violence and strife, all things we can well do without.

May I suggest to Mr O'Reilly that if he actually wants to do something useful, he should stop attacking homosexuals and their lifestyle, and instead promote the Catholic life style which I presume he favours. I remain. - Yours, etc., Kevin J. Dodd,
