RED LIGHT FOR MOBILE PHONES

BRENDAN M. REDMOND,

BRENDAN M. REDMOND,

Sir, - So, the end is nigh for the using of a mobile phone in a car while it is in motion, unless one has a "hands free" set installed. Isn't that a laugh?

I am prepared to bet my next weeks' pension that this law will go the same way as so many others that have been put on the same statute book over the years and end up virtually ignored by both public and legislators alike.

However, in the hope that it will work, could I suggest the Minister add a further clause to the proposed ban? He should also prohibit solo L-plate drivers from simultaneously using a mobile phone and smoking, applying lipstick with a dash of perfume behind the ears and driving over the speed limit in restricted areas.
