Sir, - There have been a number of letters on your pages recently prompted by the proposed Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) on the N11 route into Dublin through Stillorgan and Donnybrook. I am struck by how the letters are dominated by criticism rather than by constructive solutions.
QBCs are being introduced across the city because they provide a dramatic improvement in the quality of bus operations on the routes which they travel and - most importantly - because the improved quality of the service leads to more people choosing to take the bus rather than the car. With every bus carrying as many people as 60 cars, it makes irrefutable sense to encourage people on to the bus.
At the moment a staggering 1,000 extra cars are driving on to the roads in the greater Dublin area each, week adding to the pressure on the stretched resources of our road system. Do critics of QBCs seriously suggest that we should not try to challenge this phenomenon by improving the available public transport facilities? - Yours, etc., Conor McCarthy,
Chairman, Dublin Transportation Office, St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2.
