Putting speed cameras to work

Madam, – On Friday morning I saw that the gridlines for speed cameras have been installed on the M50. Given that motorways have been proven to be by far the safest roads both domestically and internationally, one can only assume that these cameras are being installed to generate revenue rather than to save lives.

At Dunleer on the M1 I have seen many examples of how drivers react to speed cameras on motorways, namely slowing down to be well under the limit in the presence of the camera, before speeding up again. However, as only regular users know the location of the cameras, I have witnessed a number of near misses at these sites – as a direct result of the cameras that are reportedly there to make driving safer.

Surely, these cameras would be better deployed on the primary and secondary roads that have borne witness to carnage such as that seen in Donegal? – Yours, etc,
