Madam - Fifty-four kilograms of heroin, valued at €11 million, were seized by the Garda Síochana recently (The Irish Times, October 26th). With all due respects to police efforts, my response is: so what? There will soon be another 54kg of heroin on the streets, simply because there are extraordinary profits to be made by producing and selling illegal drugs.

After all, the cultivator of the drugs seized in Dublin may have made only about €200 - perhaps for a grower in Afghanistan or the "Golden Triangle" of south-east Asia.

Politicians, governments, police, banks, airlines - not to mention families throughout the world - are corrupted by the prevailing policy. It is time to decriminalise all drugs. Let the debate begin. - Yours, etc,
