Sir, - Irish Catholics who have strong loyalties to both Church and State have been left in an invidious position by the recent remarks of President Mary McAleese at All Hallows College. The President's decision to enter into theological debate has as its obverse an implicit criticism of citizens who do not share her view.

While President McAleese's interest in her church is laudable, she is deprived by her office of the capacity to make remarks as a private individual. Her very public expression of dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church is offensive to many of her citizens. Even if those offended form but a minority, her entrance into such controversy ought to be far beneath her dignity as Uachtaran na hEireann.

While the President's generalised remark that "all" could sense disappointment with the Catholic Church is moot, there is little doubt that many are disappointed by her recent comments. - Yours, etc.,

Rev Christopher Hayden C.C., Meadowvale, Coolcotts, Co Wexford.
