Sir, – That Pope Francis singled out the life of a contemplative monk of the last century, Thomas Merton, as a way for contemporary people “to see and interpret reality” may well have been lost on much of the US House of Representatives, which he addressed on September 24th.
Merton, like much of America and the West today, spent years restlessly searching for something to which he might commit himself.
He found it eventually in contemplative prayer, a way of being present to what’s deepest inside us.
Was Pope Francis, a genuinely humble man of God, drawing attention to something that might revive our world’s drooping spirits? – Yours, etc,
