Madam, - Donncha O'Connell, writing about the proposed merger of equality and human rights statutory bodies, doubts that such a merger would achieve any cost savings or indeed "delivery simplification" (Opinion, September 9th).

But even if it did (and I seriously doubt it), those working in the equality and human rights area know that what people suffering inequality or discrimination need is more services.

Better government funding of the existing bodies is far more likely to result in increased services than the proposed super-quango, which would inevitably provide fewer services at greater cost. In an economic downturn, why are the homes and lives of those never visited by the Celtic Tiger being ransacked first? I smell a rat. - Yours, etc,
