Sir, – In the interest of accuracy (AJ Rous, December 14th), I’d like to advise that the local authorities are providing one hour free parking, seven days a week, until January 15th 2012 inclusive. The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is providing 100 free parking spaces at the old harbour at weekends and the shopping centres are also running parking incentives. I can confirm that no additional traffic wardens have been on patrol.
In an effort to address the parking issues repeatedly highlighted, the local business community, who are predominantly family-run businesses, have worked tirelessly with the local authorities and the Harbour Company to offer affordable parking.
While many local businesses are struggling, we are still working to enhance the appeal of the town to encourage people to shop locally. Dún Laoghaire is hosting its inaugural Christmas Festival with a free live crib that has brought festive cheer to the streets and as an incentive to leave the car at home, Dart users receive a 10 per cent discount on tickets to the Winter Wonderland and Ice Rink at the Festival.
No sign of Scrooge here. – Yours, etc,
