Madam, - Judge Paul Carney complains of mumbling in his court and orders a fresh trial of a murder case (The Irish Times, October 12th). As a solicitor working in the courts, I bear witness to the mumbling of solicitors, barristers, judges, gardaí and the public.
Justice must be heard in order to be done. This is not happening. The only words that are clear are the fawnings of solicitors and barristers as they address the judge as "My Lord" or "My Lordship". This fawning was recently banned by Mr McDowell and by edict of the courts, but it will continue unabated until the judges themselves forbid it.
All courts are supplied with microphones and these should be used so that people can hear whether justice is being done in the courts. - Yours, etc,
MUREDACH DOHERTY, Lower Beechwood Avenue, Dublin 6.
